Ecodesign and Energy Labelling for Refrigeration Appliances

With effect from 1 March 2021, the European Commission has introduced mandatory energy labelling also for refrigeration appliances with a direct sales function in physical and online shops.

The aim of Assocold's campaign is to provide simplified information to purchasers, encouraging them to evaluate the running costs of each appliance and, given the same technical characteristics, helping them to choose the technologies with the lowest energy consumption.

The Ecodesign energy classification creates a selection of products according to their energy performance.

Connected to this obligation, the European Commission has foreseen the creation of a European product database, EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling).

Commercial refrigeration products will be chosen by the user on the basis of lower energy consumption: this will be the main driver of innovation. Ecodesign sets minimum requirements for energy efficiency and labelling measures it.

The new energy labels will have an A-G scale with periodic rescaling. Professional products and systems will be affected. Refrigerators, washing machines, lamps, televisions, boilers, hoovers and many other products, including commercial refrigeration, will be covered by the energy labelling legislation.

Commercial refrigeration is changing in the face of a global social transformation: smaller families, a different way of buying food and eating. So the business model and factory processes must change.

In particular, the impact on the environment is attracting attention and energy from companies. The refrigerants that are being used are virtuous, natural or not, but with as little impact as possible, negligible. The F-gas regulation has contributed to this, forcing the industry to take a leap. This may be the case for eco-design and energy labelling.

"We are living in a time of rapid and important change," says Francesco Mastrapasqua, president of Assocold. "Novelties at regulatory level such as the F-gas Regulation and the new Energy Labelling and Ecodesign regulations require an adaptation in the company business model, as well as evolutions and changes at production level. Assocold's task is to accompany its members in a timely and effective manner through these technological and regulatory challenges, helping them to overcome them to ensure continuous evolution".

In Italy, companies can count on the ENEA department, which acts as the national agency for energy efficiency and "has the institutional task of supporting market players and the government to achieve energy efficiency objectives", says Milena Presutto, Researcher - Energy Efficiency Unit Department, ENEA - National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development.

"For companies in the sector, a great opportunity is opening up because the end user is finally given the chance to compare products that seem identical but have very different energy and functional performance. The companies that make this effort have a tool to demonstrate that their products perform better than their competitors".
